We walked…

University of Houston – Robertson Stadium
On April 7, 2009 the unthinkable happened. Heather & Mike lost their baby girl Maddie, she was just 17 months old. In the days that followed the blogosphere came together as ONE to help out in whichever way we could. We donated to the March of Dimes. We donated to the Spohr family. We raised awareness and we created walking teams in practically EVERY state. Team Houston was created to honor Maddie and that we did.
With 4 active team members we were able to raise over $2400 in a little over 2 weeks.
It was pretty amazing how generously family and friends were donating to such an amazing cause. I had never met Kay, Natalie or Amy in “real life” but as Houstonians we came together for Maddie. We e-mailed and twittered and got to know each other as much as we could before walk day. We were on a mission, Maddie would be proud. Walk day arrived, Amy wasn’t able to make it, but Kay, Natalie & myself met up at the stadium bright and early that Saturday morning to complete our 5 mile mission.
(Natalie, me, Kay – before walking!)
There were so many walkers.
So many stories.
Everyone had their own mission that day.
Our mission/motivation was clear.
We were doing it for the little girl with the BIG smile & those beautiful blue eyes.
We were doing it for Maddie.
The walk was scenic and we had a great time.
The March of Dimes had set up a Butterfly Garden.
For a $25 donation you could purchase a butterfly and dedicate it.
Kay did just that. Maddie had her own butterfly in Houston.
It was sponsored by Bluebell ice cream.
All the other rest stops were handing out water, they were definitely keeping us all very hydrated.
But, much to our surprise rest stop 10 had ice cream sandwiches.
